I originally wrote the text as a poem for Boba baby carriers who used it to accompany a beautiful video shot by Jasper Grey of Futuristic Films. Boba artfully finished the video, put it up on their Facebook page, and it had 40,000 shares in a week. Most moms said they couldn’t watch it without crying, so it ended up in the press and got the attention of Harper Collins.
I hadn’t thought about it becoming a picture book when I was writing it, so you can imagine my surprise when Harper Collins paired me with famous Fancy Nancy illustrator, Robin Preiss-Glasser. WHAT?! I felt so lucky, as she is my favorite prima-ballerina-turned-illustrator. She transformed my words into a beautiful picture book, and the outcome is THE BEST MOTHERS DAY AND BABY SHOWER PRESENT EVER!
It has been proven that most moms new or old will cry when they read this book. (Good tears! Not sad tears.)
An interesting tidbit about this book is that I wasn’t a mom when I wrote it! I have a very close relationship with my own mom, and I remember calling her several times over the course of writing this poem. “So, mom… what was it like to become a mother?” Tell me everything! And I asked my cousins too. And my friends. It was a family affair, which is why I love this book so much! It’s a culmination of thoughts about motherhood from all the people I love.
Here is the Boba video that started it all:
